Law School Admissions Consulting

People are often bad at telling their own stories. They might struggle to communicate the emotions. Some worry about being boastful or arrogant. Others don’t want to connect the dots.

Session 1

The Interview

But for most, it’s because we suck at asking the right questions. We know too much about ourselves. We can’t see the forest for the trees!

I love finding people’s stories. Helping them find connections in their life that they’d never noticed. Watching them realize that maybe they’re a lot more unique than they thought.

Everyone has narratives

So now we’re meeting, and you tell me about yourself. It’s just a conversation. You can tell me a lot organically, or ask to start the interview.

At some point, I’ll ask your permission to start the interview. 8-12 questions depending on time.

I draw from a pool of ~30, and I’ll improv some. What’s driving the questions? You!

I want to find the stories you want to tell. The brags. The service. The awards. The cool shit.

And maybe find the stories you don’t want to tell. The anxieties. The traumas. The stuff you’re ashamed of being proud of.

I want to build a narrative about who you are. And then I want to teach you to pitch yourself.

For real tho, that’s a lifelong skill…

This is the fun part. Three goals:

  1. Persuade the admissions officer to like and respect you;

  2. Establish your motives for going to law school; and

  3. Show that you’ll contribute positively during your time as a student and represent the school well as an alumni.

In the last fifteen minutes, we construct a bare bones narrative outline. I explain best practices for fleshing out your outline, then constructing and first draft.

And off you go, for however long you want or need!

You come back with a first draft. Hopefully you come back with extra pages full of ideas, stories and potential outlines. Kudos! I want you to overwrite the first draft.
Don’t be perfect—be creative!

Session 2
Second Draft

First we review at the thematic level. Our main goals are to:

  1. Clarify the meaning behind your stories.

  2. Explore your emotional content to verify that your voice and experiences are fully conveyed to the reader.

  3. Review how the events of your life build a narrative about your traits, values and goals.

Then we re-outline and cut.

Sometimes stories don’t need as much detail to still be effective.

Some stories won’t contribute to your enough to your overall narrative.

At the end of the session, you’ll come out with a new outline built around a cohesive narrative and pages of writing you can start filling that outline with.

Three Truths and No Lies

  1. Mark Zuckerberg attended my college graduation.

  2. James Comey was the keynote speaker at my law school commencement.

  3. I’ve been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal.
